LEHMAN RECOUNTS BATTLE OF OLD TRAFFORD BRAWL

Arsenal legendary goalkeeper Jens Lehmann recounts the experience when Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson clashed in the infamous Old Trafford tunnel.

It was the season where Arsenal went the whole season undefeated with the Invincibles. The Gunners played the Red Devils at Old Trafford in an epic Premier League clash. The game was tense all along but the brawl really startedafter Ruud van Nistelrooy missed from the penalty spot and Martin Keown started taunting him. It was late in the game, and when the referee pointed to the spot, it seemed Arsenal would go home beaten.

Ruud stepped up to take the kick in injury time but it hit the crossbar, sending the stadium into a frenzy. As Keown started, other players joined and it escalated into a full blown brawl involving over 20 players from both sides.
After the game, Cesc Fabregas threw a pizza at Ferguson and the fighting continued in the tunnel. Lehman recalled that he was looking at his former French boss as he grabbed his rival, with both managers visibly angry at each other. Lehman recalled that they also came to blows. He added that the next day on the training ground, the players were expecting their punishments from the FA.

Arsenal was fined 175,000 pounds, with Keown, Ashley Cole, Ray Parlour and Patrick Viera – who was sent off during the game – receiving bans and fines for their role in the fracas. Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo received theirs at the United side for their actions as well.
Arsenal went on to have an undefeated season but it remains the last time they won the Premier League till date.
